Aaron and Candy Spelling's 56,500-square-foot (5,250 m2) mansion in Holmby Hills. The French chateau, under construction now for two years, has turned the corner of Mapleton and Club View drives into a gawker's paradise. Sprawled across 6 acres (2.4 ha) on what once was the Bing Crosby estate, the house dwarfs the sizable mansions on the block and looms large over tranquil Holmby Park near Wilshire Boulevard. The 56,000-square-foot estate was once home to the late TV producer Aaron Spelling, his wife Candy, and their children Randy and Tori.

Her 40-foot-high foyer was designed after the O’Hara Plantation, Tara, in Gone with the Wind. A new study commissioned by Matin Real Estate shows which states have the most new houses being built and which ones have the least. Topping the list was Utah with 11.7 new builds per 1,000 residents (that’s more than double the national average). Idaho came in second place with 11.43 new builds, followed by Florida, which had 9.80 homes being built per 1,000 residents. At the bottom of the stack was Rhode Island with just 1.27 new homes per 1,000 residents.

It was sold to an unidentified Saudi Arabian buyer, The Wall Street Journal reported. 250 East 21st Street, a new 54-unit boutique building in New York’s Gramercy Park, has seen meteoric sales velocity, with 90% of the residences sold since the launch in April 2022. Now the Issac & Stern–designed building is unveiling a new four-bedroom model residence in the building. One of the most iconic compounds in Los Angeles could be yours for at a (slight) discount. On January 14, the list price for Aaron Spelling’s former Holmby Hills mansion—known as Spelling Manor or just “The Manor”—dropped by $10 million.
Fast-forward three years and the famed estate’s current price of $165 million wouldn’t come close to breaking the new California record set a year ago when venture capitalist Marc Andreessen paid $177 million for a property in Malibu. At $165 million, it’s currently the third-priciest home on the market in L.A. "I bought this antique piano for our first house for $1,900," says Spelling, photographed with her wheaten terrier Madison in the family room.
The Manor (Los Angeles)
Ecclestone modernized the interiors with a modern color palette of black, white and gray and also added a marble lounge, aquarium and nightclub. Yes, The Manor is still on the market, kicking off 2023 with a revamped price of $155 million. The home, which was constructed in 1988, has been recently been updated with contemporary interiors by the current owner Petra Ecclestone, the Formula One racing heiress. Her renovations are going to pay off too, if the listing price is met. Candy also shared the story behind specific rooms in her home, including the doll room, which housed over 1,000 dolls and was built just for the collection. The former home of late producer Aaron Spelling, his wife Candy, and their daughter Tori has been listed for $165 million, The Los Angeles Times reports.

"I think it's worth so much more now, but that was a lot of money for me at the time." What's the one room she doesn't have in the home? "I would have loved to have built them a playhouse here," Spelling says of Tori's children, Liam and 10-month-old Stella. "I first collected dolls for Tori when she was a little girl," says Spelling. "But she told me that she was afraid of them – she felt like they were watching her in her room." Spelling had a separate space built for the collection, which contains more than a 1,000 dolls on display and more in storage. Seems Ecclestone—she’s the youngest daughter of former Formula One motor racing supremo and billionaire Bernie Ecclestone—is eager to sell.
Legendary Spelling Manor Estate In Los Angeles Lists For $165 Million
With 73,500 square feet, the $150 million Spelling Manor is the largest home in Los Angeles County. "I spent four years, 24-7, planning this house," says Spelling of the French chateau-style house, which boasts five acres of manicured grounds, a tennis court, a swimming pool and a beauty salon. "I'm going to have to give up some things, but it's time for a change," she says. The TV super-producer, who brought us everything from Dynasty to 90210, had the W-shaped house constructed in 1986, after demolishing Bing Crosby’s former Los Angeles home. With 14 bedrooms and 27 baths, “The Manor” is one of the largest residences in the city.
(The two are also collaborating on 151 Bay Street in Jersey City’s Powerhouse Arts District.)Pricing for residences at the Rockwell range from $1.175 million for one-bedroom units to over $4 million for a three-bedroom. Construction topped out in September 2022, and occupancy is expected by spring 2024. The lowest of them carves into the side of a hill and is illuminated by 15 skylights. Up a spiral staircase—and past a secret bedroom behind a painting—is the so-called cabin level, home to a redwood timber–framed kitchen.
On the top tier is the 24-foot-wide dome made with heavy-duty canvas. That sphere is surrounded by a wraparound deck that offers 180-degree views of the LA skyline and San Gabriel Mountains. The estate in the coveted Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles is one of the city’s largest and grandest. It sits on five prime acres bordering the renowned LA Country Club, just blocks from Sunset Blvd., Rodeo Drive and downtown Beverly Hills.
At the time it was one of the biggest private homes in the U.S.—1,500 square feet bigger than the White House—with its 123 rooms, 14 bedrooms, and 27 bathrooms. The limestone-clad mansion expands to multiple terraces, which overlook rolling lawns complete with rose gardens, citrus orchards, statues, fountains and koi ponds. In total, there are 123 rooms including 14 bedrooms, 27 bathrooms, a tanning room, solarium, game room, grand foyer, formal dining room, library, movie theater and bowling alley. A sprawling estate that sits on 5 acres of land and has a whopping 123 rooms (including 27 bathrooms and 14 bedrooms), the chateau-like property was a hot topic among locals for years after it was built in 1988. The property — which sits on 4.7 acres and boasts 123 rooms — is for sale once again after being sold for $119.75 million in 2019, according to the Times. The current owner of the mansion is unknown as it was last purchased by a limited liability company.
The make-over re-configured many of the Spellings’ somewhat quirky features, including the multiple gift-wrapping rooms, a flower-cutting room, a barber shop, a room dedicated to Candy Spelling’s doll collection and the twin 42 x 28-foot walk-in closets. British motorsport heiress and socialite Petra Ecclestone was just 22 when, back in 2011, she paid $85 million for the sprawling 56,000-square-foot Beverly Hills mega-mansion built by legendary Beverly Hills producer Aaron Spelling. The current French chateau-style property was built in 1991 for late producer Spelling and his widow Candy Spelling, on the former estate of Crosby. After trying to sell the property off-market for $150 million, she listed it for sale in 2016 for a whopping $200 million. And while there have been rumors that even Jay-Z and Beyonce toured it at one point, no serious buyer had emerged until news of the record sale broke out in 2019. A colossal structure spanning 56,000 square feet of living space, the Spelling Manor took shape as one of the most massive and outrageously lavish properties in the country.
While the new $155 million asking price significantly diminishes its chances of regaining the title of Los Angeles’ most expensive home ever sold, there aren’t many homes in the world that can compete with the one once known as ‘Spelling Manor’. Her 40-foot-high foyer was designed after the O'Hara Plantation, Tara, in Gone with the Wind. When the producer was alive, guests and family often gathered after dinner for a couple of games. "We did have to have size-14 [shoes] made for Tom Selleck, though." And special red-and-green bowling balls were brought out during the Christmas season. There are hundreds of leather-bound scripts lining the walls and surrounding the same desk the producer used in his studio office.
Records show it was purchased by a California-based limited liability company called 594 Mapleton, but the entity behind the company is a mystery. Palmer said he was surprised at the expense and difficulty of running the roughly 5-acre property, which requires 35 to 50 full-time staff members. The project was so grand some outlets report that there were up to 500 workers on the property at a time, and that the total costs amounted to more than $20 million. Petra Ecclestone, daughter of Formula One racing baron Bernie Ecclestone, paid an astounding $85 million in cash to buy the property from Candy Spelling. Aaron and Candy Spelling brushed off the ridicule and lived many years in the massive estate.
But even though a few years have passed since the purchase, nobody really found out who bought the lavish estate. Maybe the hype around the re-listing of The Manor will shed some light on who the owner is — or give us a buyer whose fame and fortune can match those of its illustrious past residents. According to Sam Palmer, Petra’s fiancé at the time, who shared the home with the heiress, running an estate as massive as The Manor takes a lot of resources. In the late ’80s and early ’90s, the massive estate may not bring back memories. But for the people of Los Angeles, The Manor has been a hot topic for years.
